I love this era of Robert Pattinson going for the most unhinged roles. His and Zendaya’s acting was amazing.

I think the death that hit me the most was Mike’s. He just wanted to be a musician but didn’t get the chance to follow his dream because of the frustrated dreams of his family.

I hated the dad SOOO MUCH. The actor did a really good job at portraying the stereotypical macho, “boys don’t cry” kind of father.

Hello, old friend.

The main topic of this week is the Slam Dunk festival. If you are not aware, the Slam Dunk festival is an event that happens around the third weekend of May in the UK. It happens in two different locations, Hatfield and Leeds on Saturday and Sunday respectively. I wouldn’t say it is a Pop Punk festival because there is a wide variety of genres in the bands that play the festival, but it’s an alternative music event.

Last year when we visited the UK we had the chance to go and saw a whole bunch of bands that had been on my bucket list for the longest time. I was taken back to 2014 to the time I started immersing myself to Guadalajara’s music while watching The Wonder Years set. I cried with The Ghost Inside when they played Aftermath, a song that has been an anthem to me when I feel like I can’t move forward with my life. “Triumpth over Tragedy” is a belief that I try to keep present in my life. Getting to listen to bands such as The All American Rejects, boyslikegirls, We The Kings that were so present in my teenage years was an experience I didn’ think I would have the chance to have.

This year we weren’t sure if we wanted to go because there weren’t as many bands that we really wanted to see. Something that has started happening more often is that we are becoming more comfortable missing events since they are more frequent here in the UK. I don’t particularly like this, but it keeps us out of sticky situations when we run low on money.

I think we changed our mind when we found how expensive were the tickets of some of the bands that we wanted to see that were also going to the festival. For example, Hot Mulligan is coming later in September with Pierce The Veil, so we thought of maybe going later in the year to see them. When we started looking at the tickets they were already at about the same price as the late bird tickets for Slam Dunk. That was what convinced us on going, which I am very glad we did.

A Day To Remember

Their setlist consisted in a lot of songs from their Homesick, What Separates Me from You and Common Courtesy albums. Then a few other singles that they released over the last few years. And, a few songs from their most recent album, Big Ole Album Vol. 1. To me it was a dream come true because I can’t remember the amount of times I played Homesick from start to finish in my car back when I played in the band I had in Mexico. “If It Means a Lot To Me” became the anthem of our road trips when we went to play to other cities. Even friends from other bands took a liking to it and loved when we played this song when we got together.

A few friends that I met through playing music back in Mexico actually DM’d me on Instagram after I posted a story of “If It Means a Lot To You” live.

I feel like they are a band that I will never get tired of going to see live. I am definitely looking forward to the next time they come to the UK!

Great party game!

Brighton Spring, Fringe and the Great Escape

One of the things that happen during spring here is the Brighton Fringe. I can best describe it as a festival with a whole bunch of cultural events happening throughout the city. There are comedy shows, music gigs, theater plays, and so much more!

Among the music gigs that are available, there is this huge festival called The Great Escape in which a bunch of artists from all over the world come to Brighton.

A friend of mine invited me to the venue that is free to enter since we were late on getting bands for the paid venues.

It really gave vibes of being in the Witcher games, which I found fascinating. The guitarist that was playing with her was also super good. I really loved the tone of his guitar, and he had a very particular Reverb/Delay effect on some of the songs that made it feel even more mystical.

Another thing that I really liked about her music is the way the strings instruments complemented each other. She played an acoustic guitar, while another muscician played the harp and the electric guitar player did really cool arrangements throghout the song.

The last instrument she had with her was her accordion. You can see it in the picture, the wooden box with the JAS letter printed on the front. I had never seen this instrument before, but it gave off big sailor vibes.

I felt their set was very engaging with the public, and they had a super charismatic presence on stage that made their set super fun to watch.

Something about their music made me think of mexical folk music. I think it might be the high pitched synth that they use on their songs. It sounded very similar to Mexican artists that play banda or norteño.

This week I’ve had a very hard time dealing with the feelings of loneliness, sadness and my depression ramping up a little bit. Honestly, I don’t want to make all of my blog posts about me feeling bad, so I decided that this week I want to talk about a couple funny situations that happened this week.

Well, Sofi and I were looking at furniture on the IKEA app, and found a really cool book shelf that we both liked. Its length is 180 CM, and I ALSO AM 180 CM. So, the only logical solution to measure if it would fit our space is for me to lay down and check.

Honestly, I loved this moment of our week because we both laughed a lot of me just laying there instead of going for our measuring tape.

IRL Hanging Out!

Something that I thought it was really cool is that while I lived in Colombia we used to play a lot of board games online, and now we get to play it IRL! This time we played Azul, a very cool tiles game. It was actually the first time he used his copy to play with other people!

After playing azul, we played Overcooked and Nidhogg 2. I had never heard of Nidhogg before, but it apparently was super popular a few years ago! The art style between the first and second one is so different, but both very unique.

I was having such a good time that I didn’t even realize that more than 4 hours had already passed. Very much looking forward to hanging out again!

What is a sunset anyways?

Small Sunday date at Casa Azul!

On Sunday, Sofi and I really wanted to get out of the apartment, so we took a walk around London Road to find something to eat. Sofi had mentioned that she was really in the mood of getting some chilaquiles, so we tried going to Casa Azul, the mexican restaurant in the Open Market.

We were really in luck because they had chilaquiles available! Quick insiders tip, they are not listed on the menu, so you have to ask for them! I found out about this the first time I went here to get lunch about a month ago.

For the main dish both Sofi and I got an order of three tacos. Sofi got three vegan mole tacos, and I got a mix of tinga, al pastor, and mole. Even if they weren’t the best we’ve had here, they were still really good!

Sofi also got a vegan horchata, which if you don’t know what it is, I can best describe it as sweetened vanilla rice water. There are different types of horchata that depend on the country where it is prepared, but in Mexico it is made of rice and can also have milk in its making. Ours was obviously vegan and it was I think the best part of our lunch date.

Burger player review

It looks quite funky, and the sounds is quite good! To connect my bluetooth headset I had to set both the player and my headset to pairing mode and hope for the best. Luckily, they connected without issues!

Once we get a place to store our vinyls we will look into getting some wired speakers to play records in our living room. Both Sofi and I are very happy with it!

Website changes

I’ve beeen doing a lot of work in my little space within the internet. A lot of these changes are inspired by benji’s website because I absolutely love their website. It feels like a space in the internet that is really taken care of. A place in the internet that feels its entirely theirs.

I am actually using their micropub client implementation. They were very kind to help me troubleshoot some authorization issues I had when trying to publish pages from the micropub client. So, huge shoutout to them!

Gallery

I’ve been wanting to find a place to make it easier to post on my website because I want to stop using social media apps as much as possible. Starting with my gallery, I changed it so that the photos are displayed in a grid.

It’s similar to what I remember Instagram looking like when I first started using it. The biggest reasons why I wanted to stop using Instagram is because I feel like I never see my friends’ posts anymore. I even forgot about friends that I used to interact with frequently because of the current state of the algorithm. Ever since it started becoming a cheap version of Tiktok I feel like the quality of what I see on my feed has decreased a lot.

What I like the most about this new implementation is that I can upload context to the photo’s note’s page. It’s similar to how I used to display them previousle, in which I added context as quotes on each of the photos, but I like the way it looks now better!

Listen

One thing that I found really cool about the sparkles client is that it has a lot of categories to chose when you create an entry. The listen entry was one that I hadn’t considered before! I’ve been making an effort to conciously listenting to music instead of just using as a background element, so this type of entry really fit this effort.

I had to mess a lot with the CSS and Go code of the template I’m using so that it showed according to what I wanted. The way I envisioned it in my head is that I wanted to resemble what an iPod showed when you played a song.

Just like my gallery, I can add notes to each of the songs that are added so that I can write some thoughts on the music I’m listening to. I think that is pretty cool!

Play

The play list I think it’s the one I worked the hardest to get the way I wanted. I initially duplicated the list I have for my listen section, but I got the idea of having floppy disks with the cover of each of the games. It was more complex than I thought it would be, but I managed to get it working!

What I do is I render a div with the floppy disk image as its background, and then inside the div I add the game’s cover as an image. It is a bit wonky and the way the cover is cropped probably won’t work with all of the covers that I add, but at least its a start that I can later polish!

Bookmarks

Lastly, I created my own bookmarks section. I think this was the first list that I implemented on my site that isn’t using the default list that my Hugo theme has included. I changed the elements of the entries so that it shows the link to the saved page, the tag and the date it was added.

I love growing my personal garden.

What’s next?

What I would love to do next is define what is a blog post and what is a log for me. I feel like a blog can be a log, but that is not always the case depending to what I’m adding to my site.

Once I decide how to handle both, I will work on changing my notes list so that it showcases the information clearer.

I also want to add a colophon page, finish my life stack page, and rework my now page a little bit so that it’s easier to update. I’ll keep you posted so you can give me your opinion! :D

The last thing I wanted to mention is that I finally bought a record player! I got a very quirky one. Apparently, Audio Technica released an updated version of a portable record player that they released a few years ago. It is listed as a good entry turntable (can you call it that if it’s got no table? lol), so I bit the bullet and bought it.

I received it a couple days ago and haven’t had the chance to try it! Here is a picture of it so that you can see what it looks like.

It’s much smaller than I expected! Which is great since I would like to be able to bring it around the apartment depending of where we want to listen to music. I’ll try it out this week and come back with my review!

Hello, old friend.

I’ve been wanting to write to you a lot this week. It’s been a bit hard for me to exist lately. We had a lot of stuff happening at work, and with that came it’s own deal of social anxiety.

I think one of the things that have really gotten to me since we got to the UK is that my social anxiety has really ramped up because of interacting with people in a different language. I find the Sofia Vergara meme from Modern Family where she says, “Do you even know how smart I am in Spanish?” much more relatable now.

I guess I’ve had to deal with the expectations I had of myself over how well I can speak English. While living in Colombia I think I had a better English level than the average of my colleagues. I guess that gave me the impression that I wouldn’t need to worry about communicating here. Boy, was I wrong.

I feel like I am going through a very similar experience as what we went through when we first moved to Colombia. I’ve found that I need to be very intentional with the words that I use, because if I’m not, people find my pronunciation hard to understsand. This has caused me so much social anxiety that I feel like I started isolating myself to prevent social interactions.

I’ve been working on this in therapy and what has helped me deal with this the most is trying to be very aware of when I start feeling panicky. What I’m trying to learn to identify is the tightness in my chest that I usually get when I just can’t form words anymore. As soon as I start feeling it I try to take a moment to remind myself that I am doing okay, and that having an accent is okay.

Being mindful of my feelings I think is very important.

It’s my first time living, so it’s okay if I don’t have everything figured out.

On Sunday we had a day out, and we finally got a chance to go to Queen’s park! We had only seen the outside of it the last time we went to have dinner at a brunch place nearby.

I had such a lovely time walking around the park! There is a duck, gueese and swan enclosure where they are roaming around. There is even a food dispensary inside that you can use to feed them!

After the park, we walked all the back to the laines. On our way back, we found this street full of very colorful houses. We stopped for a bit to take some pictures. I think we even stopped traffic on accident while taking pictures. 😅

Lots of eventful things happened this week! I think I can start by talking about something I had been waiting for the last few weeks… MY PC FINALLY GOT HERE!

PC and Hard Drive Shenanigans

PCSpecialist finally delivered my PC!! I had been waiting for it for the last few weeks, and it’s even better than I imagined! I was initially very nervous because I ended up spending much than I had initially thought, so I really wanted it to have no issues with it. I am happy to say that so far everything has been smooth sailing. My last PC, the one I sold in Colombia, I had it for around 11 years upgrading it a couple of times throughout the years.

I was very surprised by the PCSpecialst quality of service. Throughout the whole build process they gave me updates of each step of the way. At some point I even got a render of what my PC looked like right before they finished with the building process! I am honestly very impressed and satisfied with it.

I think I really wanted to invest in a PC that could last me at least the next 5 years without needing an upgrade. Here are the specs in case you were curious:

We’ve got orange tofu at home

Sofi and I have been trying to continue with our book club / date night tradition. Every Tuesday we prepare food that we don’t normally do, and agree on an activity that either of us might want to try. For example, last week we watched Mickey 17 (I didn’t get a chance to watch it on the cinema, so we watched it on Prime!) and had burgers from Burger Brothers, one of the best burger joints in the UK.

Well, this week we decided to cook orange tofu and have a chill evening. Ever since we’ve moved to the UK it has been really hard for us to slow down enough to plan a meal other than sandwiches, or take away. So, on Tuesday we agreed on going to Sainsbury, getting the ingredients we needed, and spend the evening cooking. I was in charge of prepparing the orange sauce, and let me say that it was pretty good! A bit on the sweeter side, but nothing we couldn’t fix with a bit of extra sriracha.

Maybeshewill

We started our anniversary celebration by going to the maybeshewill gig! It was hosted at the Arch over by the beachfront. We got to the venue early because we wanted to get to see the opening band, but we might’ve overshoot it and got there extra early. Sofi asked me if I wanted to sit by the sea with her, and so we did. The weather was really good and there weren’t too many people. It was perfect for us to just kind of be there and enjoy the moment.

I didn’t realize how much I would enjoy seeing maybeshewill live. I think it was watching how much they were enjoying themselves playing live. In my head, I imagined that it would be a pretty chill concert, but I was completely mistaken. Everyone was giving such a vibrant and contagious energy. It felt passionate, it felt real, it felt so human. There is something magical on watching a group of people do what they love on a stage, and sharing this experience with the audience.

Their setlist had a wide variety of songs from their biggest albums. In a weird way, I was really happy that In Amber was the only song they played from the Fair Youth album. It gave me a chance to really immerse myself into the rest of their material.

I have a really big obsession with a couple of songs from their most recent album, No Feeling is Final. They played live Zarah and Refuturing live, and my life has not been the same.

Anniversary

I can’t believe it’s already been six years since we got married! I still can remembed that day as if it was yesterday. It seems pretty cliche to say, and I always thought people exaggerated when they said this, but it really was the best day of my life so far. To celebrate this year, we chose to do two things: get tickets for Slam Dunk, and go to the re-screen of Pride and Prejudice.

The re-screen was only available on the Marina Cinema, so we took a bus to get there. It was our first time going that far east! It was also our first time riding the bus by ourselves.

The movie theater was much better than expected! It is such a different experience than what we were used to in Colombia and Mexico. The concessions stand had products that you could pick yourself and just checkout at the register. It was a much similar experience as when we went to the movies in Sweeden.

The movie room was also much better than we expected! The seats were really spacious and comfortable. They had a recliner, so I was able to really make myself comfortable. The drink holder wasn’t at the same level as the arm rest, so that made it much easier to use.

Overall I think it was a really good experience!

And, the movie was quite good too. I mean, we had already watched Pride and Prejudice several times before. But, getting to watch it on the big screen of a movie theater surely makes it more magical.

While writting this post I looked through some of our old pictures. What I love the most about it is noticing how even if we are such different people now, we are still at our deepest core the same two kids that fell in love listening to music on the park next door.

Eastern Week!

I often forget that this country has a lot of Catholic related festivities. Eastern is one of those! Wehn I was younger, as soon I went to live on my own, I stopped paying attention to such events.

In Mexico, I remember having a tradition of painting hollow eggs, filling them with glitter and confetti, and crushing them on our friends’ heads. I remember it been quite fun.

For easter here at the office they brought chocolate easter eggs! A friend recommended that I chose this creme filled egg. I found quite strange how similar it looked to an actual egg yolk, but it actaully tasted pretty good! I will say though, just one egg is more sugar than I probably need in a whole week.

Hurstpierpoint

For the past few weeks I’ve been wanting to get together with some really good friends that we got to meet last year here in Brighton. I was particularly very excited because I wanted Naga to meet Alex’s rescue dog, Fozzie. The thing about it is that they live in a small village north of Brighton called Hurstpierpoint. It is about a 45 min bus ride from where we currently live, so it required a bit of preparation.

Earlier last month we meant to go up there but that’s when we got sick two times in a row and we had to cancel until we felt better. Well, I’m happy that the time for our visit finally happened last Friday!

Initially we meant to all go visit, and by all I mean Sofi, Naga, Saki and I. The only worry we had was that Saki is still super nervous and reactive around other dogs. Specially when they are close to Naga. So, to start testing the waters, Naga and I went on a solo adventure up there.

Hurstpierpoint is such a lovely little village. You can definitely feel the peace and quiet being there. We met with Alex at a coffee shop that is right in the middle of the main intersection of the village. They were all very happy to meet Naga. And, who wouldn’t. She is the loveliest <3

The plan was to meet without Fozzie first so that she didn’t get jelous of Alex paying attention to Naga. After the cafe we went to pick up Fozzie and headed to the park that is nearby Jack and Alex’s old place.

Fozzie is much bigger than I expected! For some reason I compared her in size with our Saki, but she is about a few kg bigger. I even think that Fozzie and Saki have a very similar face. They have very expressive human eyes. Although, unlike Saki, she has a very impressive repertoir of tricks she knows! I was so amazed by them.

One of the things that I loved the most about this park is that there are almost no car roads that go nearby. In more recent years, Naga has become very scared of loud noises. It has gottten to the point where she can get scared of fairly loud cars. So, being in a quiet and car free place I think it was a good way for her to enjoy herself.

Since the park was big enough for Naga to be off leash, we played catch just like when we lived in our first apartment in Colombia.

Long, long weekend. Chill, chill days.

One of the best parts of this long weekend is that I feel like we finally got time to just do nothing. With the move, starting in new teams, adjusting to the language, I feel like we’ve been in constant survival mode. So, other than our adventures with Naga, we just stayed home for the rest of the weekend.

What I love about the place where we currently live is that it is close to a lot of very good restaurants. One that we have been meaning to go to is Moksha. Moksha caffe that is next to St. Peter’s church with with very, very good breakfast food and a very chill ambience.

We spend the rest of our weekend watching Smosh videos snuggled up on the couch with Naga and Saki. It’s amazing what a good weekend can do to restoring your energy.

Naga is still tired.

I stopped to listen to the rumble of trees. I think it’s been years since the last time I found myself caught by the sound of the wind.

This week we met a new place. It’s called Stanmer Park. It’s a Nature Reserve that is north of Brighton. In the middle of the park there is a very small village with several restaurants and cafés that have delicious food.

One of our close friends here took us and we spent a lovely morning/afternoon. We took Naga and Saki with us. It was the first time they meet our friend and Naga took a big liking to them. I am always happy when she likes people because it feels as if she was approving of our friends.

My favorite part about our walk was the amount of flowers that were already blooming, and the new leaves coming out of the trees all around the reserve. This sense of new beginnigs was all around us. Strangely, this made it feel as if the village was welcoming us into the country.

It was our first time taking the bus anywhere. On our way to the park we sat on the accessible seats by mistake, and I felt very embarrased about it. There are still a lot of things I’ve got to learn about this new country, and I want to be more gentle to myself while I learn them.

Going back to Brighton we sat on the second floor of the bus we took. It is my first time sitting on the top of a double decker bus. It’s much narrower than I expected, but I guess that’s public transport everywhere.

In more recent years I have not been as comfortable showing my face actively on the internet. I’ve stopped posting in most social media, and even in the safe haven that I’ve built for myself here, I don’t feel comfortable showing only my face in pictures. I am good with showing pictures where I am with others, but if it’s me alone I don’t really like it.

I’ve been wondering for a while why this is the case. Do I not like the way I look? Is it because I am getting older and I can tell in the many wrinkles and spots that I’ve gained throughout the years? I am not sure. Do I not feel it’s worth showing my face? I don’t know.

I have resorted to pixelating my face. So, one more thing before I go, I cut my hair and, for once, I feel happy with how it looks. Maybe later I get to show it off. Only time will tell.

Since the last time we spoke, a lot of things have been going on. If you are not aware, I now live in the UK! Brighton has been such a kind city to us.

We were really nervous at first because it would be our first time living in a English speaking country, but I think we have made it good so far. The city is full of diversity in terms of people, art, culture, food.

On our first week here, we enjoyed having the cold and the passing of seasons back into our lives. Don’t get me wrong, having the eternal spring of Colombia was incredible, but after the pandemic it felt as if we were living the same day over and over again. Specially coming from a country with seasons this felt a bit tedious at times.

I also went to two different concerts in that first week. The first one being Touche Amore, a Californian band that I had last seen in 2017 back in Mexico, and the second one being Porter Robinson.

Sofia got us tickets as a birthday present for me last year. We weren’t super sure we were going to be able to go because we didn’t know how long our visa processes would take. Luckily, we ended up being able to move the week before the concert, giving us enough time to prepare for it.

It was a very cathartic experience because I felt a lot of closure singing Shelter to my grandpa that just passed away. I cried and sang “I’ll give them shelter like you’ve done to me. And I know, I’m not alone, you’ll be watching over us. Until you’re gone”.

It truly felt meant to be that we would be here just in time to see my favorite artist perform live. We already have some more concerts in mind to go throughout the rest of the year, but I will tell you more about it on a later date.

A bit of a downside of our time here is that them European bugs have gotten the best of us! We have caught the flu two times now since we got here! Can you believe it? Now I understand how they conquered America with these power weapons. Luckily, it appears that we are almost out of it. It’s been really annoying, but we are getting better slowly.

I have been using my Osmo Pocket camera way more often now that we are here. It’s been a nice change to use it instead of always carrying my phone. I just bought an adapter and a clip mount so that I can mount it to my backpack and record POV videos without having to hold it! I think that will make it nicer to see the places we visit.

Today I read a quote that I really liked about a parent’s love and I really related to it because of my current process on understanding my relationship with my parents.

I had a conversation with my direct manager in which he said that he saw narcissistic traits in me based on his own experience with narcissism. This left me doubting a lot of my own behaviors from the past couple of years. I was very afraid and ashamed to talk about this with my partner because I felt as if I have been an impostor on the good intentions I thought I had throughout these last months.

Luckily, I got the courage to talk to her about these thoughts and she gave me a lot of reassurance on how my manager’s evaluation was a very big assumption, as well as very bad act of character on his side. I was also able to talk to a very close friend of mine who also reassured me on how he has perceived me throughout our years knowing each other as someone caring who tries to consider the needs of the people who surround me just as much, if not more, as what I consider my own.

I felt very sad when I had this conversation with my manager because it completely changed the perception I had of myself. It changed it to the point of doubting my core values. It’s really weird how much someone can affect you when they very confidently make an assumption of you and you don’t have the confidence to see otherwise.

I still feel very sad and angry, but having the support of my loved ones has really helped me to not spiral and overthink it as much as I was doing before.

The world is a weird place, and I’m just tired.

howcomebl - For some reason my browser hadn’t updated to yesterday’s izzzzi’s entries, and I think that what you posted about the love of your parents was very beautiful. I really relate to it as I’ve had gone through a similar process of unraveling and understanding my relationship to them as I’ve gotten older.

alephtwo - I also like the cycle of communication in here, but I have been very distracted in turning my entries here that I sometimes fear I miss too much. I guess its part of the fear of missing out on stuff that I learnt from other more harmful social media sites.

For better or for worse, I’ve been away from my keyboard a lot these past few days! I’ve finished yet another book. It was the “How to Talk to Anyone” book by Leil Lowndes. I don’t think I can say I liked it, but it did have some interesting points. Overall, I think it is very outdated.

I hadn’t realized that communication books are also considered Self Help books. I don’t know why ever since I started considering them Self Help books they have lost my interest in a lot of what I’ve been reading. It possibly is because I feel like they want to scam me or something like that. I guess the positive part of this is that I am now more critical with what I take from them than before. Taking the advice with a grain of salt.

I just got my English Certification results as well, and I passed the C1 level. It is a bit bittersweet because they don’t provide any feedback or anything of the answers that I got wrong. I hate standardized tests.

I have enjoyed writing my izzzzi’s journal posts recently more than before. I feel like they are a quick way where I can express some of the thoughts that I’ve kept in my mind for too long. Not sure how much time I will have this week for longer posts, but I will try to allow myself the space to write something down.

alephtwo - I’ve been going through similar thoughts recently. My main reason for going into programming was because I was afraid of being an artist. But, all my life I’ve been drawn to anything that is artistic. Music, illustration, modelling, photography, writing even anything that can be used as a way of expression I am deeply fascinated by it. So, I guess that now that I am allowing myself to pursue those mediums I question myself if to be an artist depends on the eye of the beholder, or if I can just assume that identity. Idk, crazy thoughts sometimes.

Tomorrow, we take the listening, writting and reading exam. Standarized tests really get on my nerves, so I am a bit anxious about it. I guess I do speak English on a daily basis, as well as speak it with colleagues and friends. That should mean something… right? haha

The Heavenly Tirant book is turning out to be super good. I am looking forward to to have my book club on Tuesday to talk about it.

I am already getting nervous about my trip to Helsinki. I hate traveling by plane.

One of the things that I’ve found harder come to terms that I won’t probably be able to see a lot of my stuff in around a year. We really want to get to the UK and really establish ourselves before we start spending on getting our stuff to our new home. One trule does not know what they have until they have to move.

Hopefully we will be able to apply some of the learnings that we got from our first move from Mexico to Colombia. I am excited, nervous, sad and worried.

The biggest source of my worry is sending my dogs to the UK. They came from Mexico to Colombia in a plane cabin, but for longer flights they need to go in the cargo space. But, today I was very relieved to see that they started going inside their kennels. I hope they can start seeing them as a safe space for them and be calmer on our trip.

palomakop - I love your picture! It has a very nostalgic feel to it for some reason, and I really enjoy that.

I am very happy to be able to work on more stuff that I really like, such as improving the wellbeing of the people in my whole team, but I am also so very happy to not be in a toxic work environment. I was so tired of having to constantly watch my back.

Admittedly, the people making it as bad as it was are the minority and I am really going to miss a lot of my friends. Really puts into perspective how much bad a few can make.

I want to document my last few months here in Colombia because it is truly a beautiful and vibrant place.

hecanjog - I’m glad! I was very scared to dive into this project because this camera meant so much to us. Now, it means much more! :D

So, what I set my mission to fix it and gift her our old lovely instax camera. The process itselt was very simple. I unassembled it and figured out that I just needed to unsolder three cables from the broken flash, and then solder the new one. The problem is that Fuji (and I guess generally most of the companies nowadays) are not great with part replacement, less for older devices.

What I ended up doing was going to the Facebook Marketplace and trying to find the same instax model for sale. Luckily, I was able to find one close to where I live that had some issues, which made it great as a replacement as to reuse old parts as much as possible.

The week before Christmas, I asked a couple friends to help me with desoldering the old flash and soldering the new flash. Dissassembling the devices was very quick. The iFixit guides are super handy, as well as a youtube video that showed me some hidden screws that weren’t in the guide. Then, we went through the process of desoldering and soldering the flash again. I was pretty nervous because of my previous experience of burning things I tried to solder/desolder lol, but my friends were great at it and, after quickly putting it back together, I was able to take my first picture with it in almost a year.

Needless to say, both my partner and I were very happy about having our camera back. We took pictures of our Christmas dinner, dogs, and put it on our 2024 album.

In other news, I’ve been working on my website a little bit today. I changed it’s icon to a cute gif I put together. I’ve loved getting to nurture my website in a place I’ve actually enjoyed being.

I am back on my PC again! I decided to take a couple of days off for the New Year. To me it is much more meaningful the New Year than Christmas. Not sure if it is a ritual of endings, but I take it much more seriously.

We made a lot of food for last year’s New Year’s Eve! I am very happy about this because to me having lots of food is a sign of happiness and prosperity for some reason. We made vegan lasagna, green pozole and tacos of mole with tofu. It was all DELICIOUS. I was very happy that we made more than we could eat so that we could eat leftovers the rest of the week.

I also took advantage of today to setup this year’s Hobonichi Techo. My partner got me the Weeks type this year, so I am excited to get my weeks well organized!

I also finished my End of the Year recap on my website! I liked tracking what I read/watch/play, as well as some player stats that I kind of put together for some of this year’s resolutions.

It was a very complicated but good year overall. Hope everyone’s year started well!

This year’s reading list was less fiction, and more leadership related. I really enjoy reading about how to improve my leadership and communication skills.

I am looking to give my partner a new year’s gift. I think I’ve come to appreciate more the New Year than Christmas. I understand the appeal of the holiday, but there is something almost mystical about starting a new year. I would love to take that opportunity to let the people I care about what they mean to me.

I’ve also been working on my new year’s resolutions. So far, my main focus next year will be on improving my mental, physical and financial health. I also want to read just as much as I read this year. I finished 16 books this year! It’s been a while since I was able to read as much. I think the last time I remember reading as much was when I was in summer break during elementary school. I remember going to book fairs and getting collections of books. That’s how I read all of the Chronicles of Narnia books in a couple of weeks. Unbelievable that that was 20 years ago! Time sure is something.

Saki was being a bit overprotective of Sofi today.

We finally went to the doctor to check our allergies. We had to move to the living room to be able to sleep, because something in our bedroom is causing us to sneeze non-stop. They prescribed medicine and a test for Sofi. I am much calmer knowing that everything is not as bad as we expected it to be.

I didn’t do any physical activity today, and I feel quite frustrated about it. I have decided that tomorrow I will got to the gym either before or after I clean my bike. I guess one good thing is that I achieved my step count.

I hope I get better sleep tonight because my head has been wonky as hell.

I’ve been thinking of adding these logs to my website as a way to archive them. Not sure how much trouble that will be. We’ll see.

In other news, we are getting together with some friends for Christmas. I think it will be nice for both my partner and I to have more company. Still, very much looking forward to spending new year’s just the two of us. I am getting my vegan lasagna recipe ready!

Tomorrow I will try to get back into doing some kind of exercise. It’s been too long since the last time I actually did any kind of physical activity. :')

Well, well, well. We see each other again in the internet-sphere.

It’s been a few months since the alst time I’ve been actively online in any form of social media. Active in the sense of posting, commenting, liking content. To be fair, I have been lurking all this time, but uncappable of actually taking the first step towards interacting with people. And, this does not only apply to social media like Twitter (fuck X), Instagram, or TikTok, I’ve also been pretty absent in IM apps. Basically, I’ve felt like I ghosted most of the people who I don’t see on a daily basis. Why, you might ask. I am not entirely sure.

This all started a few months ago when we went on our trip to Europe. My routine was working great for me, and I had been consistenly taking care of myself on a daily basis. My attention span was just good enough to keep this momentum going. Then, we flew to London, and my routine went out of the window. And with it my emotional energy to do anything other than just trying to exist as a person.

The stress of the trip triggered something in me that I have not been able to recover from. After this trip I feel like I’ve been going through very emotional demanding events, week after week. Month after month I’ve tried to recover from this, but it feels like I am on a downward spiral where I can’t seem to keep up with what is happening around me. Therefore, the only path forward for me to not crash is to “hide” myself.

Hiding worked the first few months. I was able to breathe a little, not worrying about having to exist online, or answer any messages. After all, we don’t owe it to anyone to respond any of their messages. Then, the weeks started to pass and I got stuck in a weird limbo in which I couldn’t reach out to anyone, or stop from just lurking social media. If I could’ve just detached and removed myself from social media, I think this would be a complete different story. But, I didn’t have the patience to do so. What followed was a series of emotional breakdowns happening in the span of a couple months.

A side effect that this “hiding” took on me is that it removed any kind of hobbies or activities that I used to be involved with online. Any kind of interaction that involved me reading and sending messsages with anyone online got paused indefinitely. That also meant that the support network that I had online was no longer there. I struggled a lot with myself because of it. It also didn’t help that I had been changing therapists to hopefully find one that can treat my AD(H)D. It is very hard to have to try and figure out a part of me that has been haunting me all my life, while also removing a lot of factors that made me feel happy.

Right now, I think that I am slowly getting better at keeping in touch with people, even if I have been as burnt out from my day job as I have been. One thing that helped me get out of this groove is that I have been attending local game development events recently. It is really cool to see young people starting their journey, and to be able to there for them in case they might need guidance. I guess that was the catalyst for me to reach out to people again. If I can’t reach out to anyone, how will I be able to help other people? So, that’s happening.

I decided to try and get back slowly. Mainly to try and go back to the projects that I enjoy working on. A big part of this is my small community/learning focused studio. I want to be able to make games, and also help other people make games. I don’t want to continue being in the limbo. I just want to help, create and share my passions. So, like one of the Good Ugly Bunnies I once drew, I am trying once again.

When I was younger I heard the story of an artist that killed himself in his art so that he could survive in real life. Living most of my life through the lenses of depression, that sounded like a way for me to save myself. That became the pillar of this project. Still, it’s a project that is still unfinished as I think subconciously I have been waiting to be in a better place to finish the project.

When I started working on this project I was at a point in my life where I felt lost. I felt as if I was going around in circles, making the same mistakes stuck in the same place. From this experience and wanting to let go of everything that was holding me back, I set up to create a concept album in which I would methaphorically kill myself in the pursuit of finding meaning in my life.

Here are some more details on the brief I put together a few years ago:

The concept of this album is based around the concept of resilience. Resilience is the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape, the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. In a more psychological concept, resilience is the ability of turning any liability into an advantage no matter how many times it brings you down.

This album projects this concept by creating a narrative in which humanity goes down the wrong path and later on recovers by going back to its roots. The album consists of 7 songs where each song tells a certain part of this story. For practical purposes I’ll list the tracks with its corresponding narrative part.

TRACKS:

1. The end is the beginning / program.init

This is the beginning of our story. This song talks about anger and hatred towards one another. This part of the story portraits humanity in a constant war with itself. One of the feelings that I tried to capture was greed and self hatred. We know we are doing something wrong but as long as my personal interests are covered I don’t care about the consequences of my actions.

2. …and then there was none. / extinción

After years of wars, humanity has nearly extinguished itself. A feeling of hopelessness surrounds all that is left. There’s an imminent sensation that humanity is grieving its own existence. This song is meant to project sadness and depression. Feeling as if none of what you do mattered to the universe. What’s the purpose of existing if death is marching towards us one day at a time?

3. Dystopian Utopía / distopía.utópica

When all hope left the human collectiveness the only way left for it to go was to technological advances. After all the death caused by war technology was the apparent saviour of our souls. Sooner we realized that this technology wasn’t going to be used to save humanity, but to enslave it. What first appeared as a Utopia didn’t take long to turn into the dystopia we always feared. This relates to when someone, after losing everything, they turn to addictions to try and cope or fill the void left by all that was lost.

4. Resist, Create / resistir.crear

As we’ve seen throughout history, whenever the situation hits rock bottom ideas start to surge. Little by little these ideas turn into a concept and later into a belief. Humanity may be lost in its own misery but people are starting to wake up and break the chains that were imposed unto them. They want change and so they start to rebel to their own kind. Hope rebirths from the ashes of humanity’s collectiveness. This song relates to whenever you’ve had enough of fucking things up and realize you want to change the way you’ve been living your life. Create a better life for yourself.

5. Resist, Defeat / resistir.vencer

With every good intention we come up in the world comes opposition. Comes the people who are better off in their comfort zone. Comes the people who want to enslave us to their own agenda. We have to resist, we have to defeat the apathy created by our own self hatred and transform it into the hope and change we want to see in the world. We are all part of the bigger picture, part of one entity. You and I are community, you and I are part of what makes us human.

6. Resist, Transcend / resistir.trascender

The path we paved was filled with hopes and unity between one another. A sense of integrity and brotherhood rules humanity. We have transcended our collective mind to work towards the bigger picture, the preservation of life and all that it means. We are one, we are all, we are part of a whole. We may still be afraid, we may still hate but we will never be left alone with ourselves.

7. I am no longer here / program.exit

We break the generational cycles. We leave a better place for the people who come after. It’s the turn of the new generation to continue with the legacy that humanity has created. This is a rememberance song to all those people who aren’t with us anymore but that left a mark in our souls for us to carry them over. We carry a piece of their souls on every breath we take. We carry their will in every fight we win.

I made my first Playdate game for the Ludum Dare Jam 55 and lived to tell about it.

The Playdate is a small fantasy console in which one can develop games using their SDK. The cool thing about the console is that it has a crank that you can use in your games. For development, you can choose to either work with Lua or the C language.

I’ve had my eyes on this device for a few months now, so when I saw them for sale at GDC, I bought one without hesitation. I also convinced a couple of Colombian game developer friends to buy one with the excuse that we would make games and at least get 1 USD in sales back.

A few weeks passed after my GDC trip, and the Ludum Dare was just around the corner. We decided it was a great opportunity for us to start developing on the platform, so we put up a team of three to make a small Playdate game.

I recently saw a video, can’t remember where it was from, but it was a Tumblr post of someone saying that they imagined death as getting carried by your parents to your bedroom when you fell asleep on the couch watching a movie or playing videogames as a kid. That resonated with me in a very deep level because if I have no way of knowing or understanding what comes after, I might as well make it my own.

Death is the view from my bedroom window on a sunny Sunday morning at my parents house. Death is getting to play Fable for the very first time over again. Death is the first apartment I ever lived in after moving out of my parents house where I had my first taste of independece. Death is the corner store close to my grandparents house where my aunt would buy me Digimon and Transformers toys while visiting for Christmas. Death is all the people and places that have no way of coming back, but that I still somehow hope to find at the same place I left them.

I would like to think that after all is said and done, at the end of my life, I can greet death as a an old friend. One who has watched over me throughout the years, capturing places and memories that are no longer, waiting for the moment when we can finally meet again.

This is a vegan recipe of this type of bread. If you end up making this yourself, let me know how it went. Hope you like it!

Ingredients

• 560 g wheat flour (4 ⅔ cups)
• 160 g sugar (¾ cup + 1 tbsp)
• 2 teaspoons instant yeast for bread
• 1 teaspoon of salt
• ½ cup of soy milk, warm
• ¼ cup of orange juice
• 1 teaspoon of of orange zest
• 1 ½ teaspoons of vanilla extract
• 120 g margarine, melted (½ cup + ½ tbsp)
• 170 g potato, peeled, boiled and mashed or blended until mashed potatoes texture (~⅔ cup of mashed potatoes)

Topping

• 2 tablespoons of margarine, melted
• ½ cup of sugar

Instructions

1. In a mid sized bowl, sift the flour and add the sugar, yeast and salt.
2. In another mid sized bowl, mix the milk, orange juice, orange zest, vanilla, melted margarine (120 g). Add the masshed potatoes and mix again.
3. Pour the previous mix in the bowl where you have your flour and mix until the dough starts incorporating.
4. Move the dough to a plain surface covered in flour and knead for 8 minutes or until the dought looks slightly shinnier, feels very smooth, but does not stick to your hands as easily.
5. Grease a large bowl with a bit of olive or coconut oil and place the dough inside it. Cover it with a kitchen towel or large plate so that it stays warm and let the dough rise. Place the bowl in a warm place until it doubles its size. (Approximately 1 ½ hours) WARNING: The dough can be a bit sticky and this is normal, so do not worry.
6. Once the time has passed, deflate the dough by punching it slightly. This will allow better handling of the dough.
7. Take the dough out of the bowl, take a small chunk (130 g aproximately) and set it aside. Divide the remaining dough in 8 parts. Roll each of these into balls and transfer them to a tray with waxed paper or a silicone mat (leave enough space between each piece). Press each ball slightly.
8. Divide the small 130 g chunk of dough in 16 parts and extend each one forming strips that are long enough to cover each of the dough balls. When you extend each strip, roll them with your hand and fingers slightly open so that you form the small divisions that represent the skeleton.
9. Place 2 strips forming an ‘X’ on top of each dough ball so that they adhere to itself. (Optionally, you can also add smaller dough balls on top of the ‘X’ you just made). Repeat the process with the rest of the dough balls.
10. Cover with a towel and let it rest for 30-45 mins on a warm spot, or until it doubles its size.
11. Once 15 minutes are left before the dough finishes rising, preheat the oven at 176°C (350°F).
12. Bake for 20-22 minutes, or until the bread has taken a goldenish color. Take out of the oven and let it rest over a slit for 10 minutes.
13. Once the 10 minutes have passed, melt 2 tablespoons of margarine, and cover the bread with a brush. Then, sprinkle a bit of sugar on top. Shake the bread a little bit to remove the excess of sugar.
14. Keep the bread in an airtight container so that it does not dry as fast. We recommend that you use a microwave to heat the bread for approximately 10 minutes before eating it. This is so that it has a soft consistency. A pan with a wide lid works good as well, but will dry the bread faster.

My name is Luis Bazan and I am a Mexican Software and Game Developer now living in the UK. I’m really passionate about game development communities, music, and I’m always eager to help newcomers into the industry.

Contexto

El espectro de OpenGL no especifica ninguna API para crear y manipular ventanas. Sistemas de ventanas modernas que soportan OpenGL incluyen un sub-sistema que proporciona la unión entre un contexto OpenGL y el sistema de ventanas. En el sistema X Window la interfaz se llama GLX. Microsoft proporciona WGL (pronunciado: Wiggle) para Windows y MacOS tiene CGL.

Al trabajar directamente con estas interfaces con el fin de crear una ventana en la que mostrar gráficos suele ser un trabajo duro y por eso utilizamos una biblioteca de alto nivel que abstrae los detalles finos. La biblioteca que usamos aquí se llama la ‘OpenGL utility library’, o GLUT. Proporciona una API simplificada para la gestión de ventanas, así como la gestión de eventos, control IO y algunos otros servicios. Además, GLUT es multiplataforma de modo que hace más fácil portabilidad. Alternativas a GLUT incluyen SDL y GLFW.

El código paso a paso

glutInit(&argc, argv);

Esta funcion inicializa GLUT. Los parametros pueden ser previstos directamente de la linea de comandos y pueden incluir opciones utiles como ‘-sync’ y ‘-gldebug’ los cuales desactivan la naturaleza asincrona de X y automaticamente checkean errores en GL y los muestra (respectivamente).

Aquí configuramos algunas opciones de GLUT. GLUT_DOUBLE permite el doble buffer (dibuja en un búfer en segundo plano mientras se visualiza otro buffer) y el buffer de color donde la mayor representación termina (es decir, la pantalla). Por lo general vamos a querer estos dos, así como otras opciones que veremos más adelante.

Estas llamadas especifican los parámetros de la ventana y la crean. Usted también tiene la opción de especificar el título de la ventana.

glutDisplayFunc(RenderSceneCB);

Dado que estamos trabajando en un sistema de ventanas la mayor parte de la interacción con el programa en ejecución se produce a través de funciones en respuesta a determinados eventos. GLUT se encarga de interactuar con el sistema de ventanas subyacente y nos ofrece algunas opciones de devolución de llamada. Aquí se utiliza sólo una devolucion de llamada (callback) denominada “principal” (RenderSceneCB) para hacer todo el renderizado de un frame. Esta función se llama continuamente por bucle interno de GLUT.

glClearColor(0.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f);

Este es nuestro primer encuentro con el concepto de estado en OpenGL. La idea detrás de este estado es que la representación es una tarea tan compleja que no puede ser tratada como una llamada de función que recibe un par de parámetros (y funciones diseñadas correctamente nunca reciben una gran cantidad de parámetros). Es necesario especificar shaders, buffers y diversas banderas que afectan la forma en que la represtación se llevará a cabo.

Además, usted suele desear conservar la misma pieza de configuración a través de varias operaciones de representación (por ejemplo, si usted nunca deshabilita la prueba de profundidad, entonces no hay necesidad de especificarla que para que ocurra en cada llamada al render). Es por eso que la mayor parte de la configuración de las operaciones de renderizado se realiza mediante el establecimiento de indicadores y valores en la máquina de estados de OpenGL y las llamadas de representación por sí mismas se limitan generalmente a los pocos parámetros que giran en torno al número de vértices para dibujar y su desplazamiento inicial (offset).

Después de llamar a una función de cambio de estado, la configuración particular se mantiene intacta hasta la siguiente llamada a la misma función con un valor diferente. La función citada establece el color que se utilizará para despejar el framebuffer (descrito más adelante). El color tiene cuatro canales (RGBA) y se especifica como un valor normalizado entre 0.0 y 1.0.

glutMainLoop();

Esta llamada le otorga el control a GLUT que ahora comienza su propio bucle interno. En este bucle se escucha a los eventos del sistema de ventanas y los pasa a través de las devoluciones de llamada (callback) que hemos configurado. En nuestro caso GLUT sólo llamará a la función se registró como un callback display (RenderSceneCB) para darnos una chace para renderizar el frame.

Lo único que hacemos en nuestra función de hacer es limpiar el framebuffer (con el color especificado anteriormente - pruebe a cambiar). La segunda llamada le dice a GLUT que intercambie los roles de backbuffer y frontbuffer. En la siguiente llamada de la función vamos a renderizar el frame en el frontbuffer y se mostrará el backbuffer.

Contexto

Este es nuestro primer encuentro con GLEW, la Librería de Extension Wrangler de OpenGL. GLEW nos ayuda con el dolor de cabeza que puede ser el manejo de extensiones en OpenGL. Una vez inicializado consulta todas las extensiones disponibles en tu plataforma, las carga dinámicamente y te da acceso fácil a ellas usando un solo archivo header.

En este tutorial veremos el uso de vertex buffer objects (VBOs) por primera vez. Como lo dice su nombre, son objetos que se utilizan para almacenar vértices. Los objetos que queremos visualizar dentro de nuestro entorno 3D, ya sean monstruos, castillo o un solo cubo girando, se construyen conectando grupos de vértices. VBOs son la forma más eficiente de cargar vértices en el GPU. Son buffers que se pueden almacenar en la memoria de video y nos da el tiempo de acceso más corto al GPU, por eso su uso es ampliamente recomendado.

Este tutorial y el siguiente son los únicos de la serie que van a apoyarse en las funciones existentes del pipeline en vez de las que podamos programar. De hecho, no haremos transformaciones en ninguno de estos dos tutoriales. Nos apoyaremos únicamente en la forma con la que los datos fluyen por el pipeline. En los siguientes tutoriales haremos un análisis más profundo de este flujo, pero por ahora es suficiente entender que antes de llegar a la parte de renderizador (el que se encarga de dibujar los puntos, las líneas y los triángulos usando coordenadas de pantalla), los vértices visibles tienen sus coordenadas en X, Y y Z en el rango [-1.0, 1.0]. El renderizador mapea estas coordeanadas en el espacio de pantalla (p.e, si el ancho de pantalla es 1024 entonces la coordenada X -1.0 será mapeada a 0 y 1.0 será mapaeda a 1023). Finalmente, el renderizador dibuja las primitivas de acuerdo a la topología especificada en la llamada de dibujo (draw call) (ve abajo en el código paso a paso). Como no unimos ningún tipo de shader a nuestro pipeline los vértices no pasarán por niguna transformación. Esto significa que únicamente necesitamos darles un valor en el rango descrito previamente para poder visualizarlos. De hecho, si seleccionamos cero para ambos X y Y posicionará el vértice en el punto medio de ambos ejes - en otras palabras, en la mitad de la pantalla.

Para instalar GLEW, está disponible en su página principal: http://glew.sourceforge.net/ . La mayoría de las distribuciones de Linux proveen paquetes precompilados para la librería. En Ubuntu puedes instalarlo corriendo el siguiente comando:

El código paso a paso

Aquí incluiremos el header de GLEW. Si incluyes otros headers de OpenGL debes tener cuidado de incluir este archivo antes de los demás o podrías tener problemas de compatibilidad. Para poder enlazar la aplicación con GLEW necesitamos ‘-lGLEW’ al makefile.

Este archivo header está ubicado en ‘ogldev/Include’ y contiene las estructuras de ayuda como la estructura de vector. Expandiremos más el contenido de este header conforme vayamos avanzando en los tutoriales. Hay que asegurarnos de clonar el código fuente del repositorio de acuerdo a las instrucciones que podemos encontrar aquí . Considera también que cada carpeta de tutorial contiene un scrip llamado ‘build.sh’ que puede ser usado para compilar el tutorial. Si usas tu propio sistema de compilado usa ese script como referencia para las banderas de compilado/linker necesarias.

Aquí inicializamos GLEW y checamos por errores. Esto se debe de hacer después de que GLUT haya sido inicializado.

Vector3f Vertices[1];
Vertices[0] = Vector3f(0.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f);

Creamos un arreglo de una estructura tipo Vector3f (este tipo de dato es definido en math_3d.h) e inicializamos XYZ en cero. Esto hará que el punto aparezca en medio de la pantalla.

GLuint VBO;

Hacemos una alocación de un GLuint en la parte global del programa para almacenar el handle del objeto de búfer de vértice (VBO). Veremos más adelante que la mayoría (si no es que todos) los objetos en OpenGL son accesidos por variables de tipo GLuint.

glGenBuffers(1, &VBO);

OpenGL define varias funciontes de tipo glGen* para generar objetos de diferentes tipos. Usualmente toman dos parámetros - el primero especifica el número de objetos que queremos creare y el segundo es la dirección del arreglo de GLuints que almacena los handles (manejadores) que el driver alocará para ti (¡asegurate que el arreglo sea lo suficientemente grande para manejar tu petición!). Llamadas futuras a esta función no generarán los mismos manejadores de objetos a menos que los borres primero con la función glDeleteBuffers. Algo que debemos considerar es que en este punto no estamos especificando lo que queremos hacer con los buffers para que puedan ser tratados con “genéricos”. El trabajo de especificar la función de los buffers será del siguiente método.

glBindBuffer(GL_ARRAY_BUFFER, VBO);

OpenGL tiene una forma única de usar los handles. En muchas APIs los handles simplemente se pasan a cualquier función a la que puedan ser relevantes y luego se realiza la acción en ese handle. En OpenGL unimos el handle con un nombre de objetivo y ejecutamos los comandos en dicho objetivo. Estos comandos afectan al hanlde que fue adjuntado hastsa que otro sea adjuntado en su lugar o hasta que la llamada tome cero como manejador. El objetivo GL_ARRAY_BUFFER significa que el búfer contendrá un arreglo de vértices. Otro objetivo que puede ser útil es GL_ELEMENT_ARRAY_BUFFER que significa que el búfer contiene los índices de los vértices en otro búfer. Existen otros tipos de objetivos disponibles que estudiaremos en tutoriales más adelante.

glBufferData(GL_ARRAY_BUFFER, sizeof(Vertices), Vertices, GL_STATIC_DRAW);

Después de unir nuestro objeto debemos llenarlo con información. La llamada que acabamos de escribir toma el nombre del objetivo (el mismo que fue usado en la unión), el tamaño de los datos en bytes, la dirección del arreglo de vértices y la bandera que indique el patrón de uso para estos datos. Como no vamos a cambiar el contenido del búfer debemos especificar GL_STATIC_DRAW. Para especificar lo opuesto sería GL_DYNAMIC_DRAW. Así como esto pueda ser único para OpenGL es bueno pensar bien en las banderas que debemos usar. El driver puede apoyarse en esta bander para optimizar heurísticas (tales como cual es el mejor lugar en memoria para almacenar el búfer).

glEnableVertexAttribArray(0);

En el tutorial de shaders veremos que los atributos de los vértices usados en el shader (posición, normal, etc) tienen un índice mapeado a ellos que nos permite create una unión entre los datos del programa de C/C++ y los nombres de los atributos dentro del shader. Adicionalmente debemos también habilitar el índice de cada atributo de vértice. En este tutorial todavía no utilizamos shaders, pero la posición de vértice que hemos cargado en el búfer será tratado como el índice del atributo de vértice 0 en la función fija del pipeline (que se activa cuando no hay un shader que limite el programa). Debes activar cada atributo de vértice o si no los datos no podrán ser accedidos por el pipeline.

glBindBuffer(GL_ARRAY_BUFFER, VBO);

Aquí unimos nuestro búfer de nuevo y nos preparamos para hacer el draw call. En este pequeño programa únicamente tenemos un búfer de vértice, entonces hacer esta llamada cada frame es redundante, pero en programas más complejos hay múltiples búfers para almacenar varios modelos y debemos actualizar el estado del pipeline con cada búfer que penemos utilizar.

glVertexAttribPointer(0, 3, GL_FLOAT, GL_FALSE, 0, 0);

This call tells the pipeline how to interpret the data inside the buffer. The first parameter specifies the index of the attribute. In our case we know that it is zero by default but when we start using shaders we will either need to explicitly set the index in the shader or query it. The second parameter is the number of components in the attribute (3 for X, Y and Z). The third parameter is the data type of each component. The next parameter indicates whether we want our attribute to be normalized before it is used in the pipeline. It our case we want the data to pass un-changed. The fifth parameter (called the ‘stride’) is the number of bytes between two instances of that attribute in the buffer. When there is only one attribute (e.g. the buffer contains only vertex positions) and the data is tightly packed we pass the value zero. If we have an array of structures that contain a position and normal (each one is a vector of 3 floats) we will pass the size of the structure in bytes (6 * 4 = 24). The last parameter is useful in the case of the previous example. We need to specify the offset inside the structure where the pipeline will find our attribute. In the case of the structure with the position and normal the offset of the position is zero while the offset of the normal is 12.

glDrawArrays(GL_POINTS, 0, 1);

Finalmente, hacemos la llamada a dibujar la geometría. Todos los comandos que hemos visto hasta ahora son importantes, pero solo nos ayudan a configurar el espacio para el comando de renderizado. Aquí es donde el GPU realmente empieza a trabajar. Combinará los parametros de cada draw call con el estado que hemos estado construyendo hasta este punto y hará el renderizado de los resultados en pantalla.

OpenGL nos da diferentes tipos de draw calls y cada uno de ellos sirve para diferentes casos. En general podemos dividirlos en dos categorías - renderizado ordenado y renderizado indexado. El renderizado ordenado es más simple. El GPU manda los búfers de vértices, yendo uno por uno por cada vértice, y los interpreta de acuerdo a la topología especificada en el draw call. Por ejemplo, si especificamos GL_TRIANGLES entonces los vértices 0-2 se convierten en el primer triánguo, los vértices 3-5 en el segundo triángulo, etc. Si quieres que el mismo vértice aparezca en más de un triángulo deberás especificarlo dos veces en el búfer de vértices, lo cual es un desperdicio de espacio.

El renderizado indexado es más complejo e involucra un búfer adicional llamado búfer de índice (index buffer). El index buffer contiene los índices de los vértices en el búfer de vértices. El GPU escanea el index bufer y, de forma similar a como lo hace con el renderizado ordenado, los índices 0-2 se convierten en el primer triángulo y así sucesivamente. Si quieres el mismo vértice en dos triángulos diferentes únicamente debes especificar su índice dos veces en el index buffer. El búfer de vértices solo necesita una copia. El dibujado de índices es más común en juegos porque la mayoría de los modelos son creados utilizando triángulos que representen una superficie (piel en el caso de una persona, una pared de un castillo o escenario, etc.) con una cantidad grande de vértices compartidos entre si.

En este tutorial usamos el draw call más simple - glDrawArrays. Este es un tipo de renderizado ordenado, entonces no necesimtamos un index buffer. Debemos especificar la topología de los puntos, lo que significa que cada vértice es un punto. El siguiente parámetro es el índice del primer vértice a dibujar. En nuestro caso queremos empezar al principio del búfer para poder especificar cero, y esto a su vez nos permite almacenar múltiples modelos en el mismo búfer y posteriormente seleccionar el que queremos dibujar basado en su desfase dentro del búfer. El último parámetro es el número de vértices a dibujar.

Es buena práctica deshabilitar cada atributo del vértice cuando no es utilizado inmediatamente. Dejandolo habilitado cuando un shader no lo está utilizando es una forma segura de hacernos las cosas más difíciles.

The purpose of this podcast is to destigmatize talking about our mental health, and to share our experience so that people entering any type of creative industry can understand that they are not alone in the issues they might be facing.

In the podcast we had a variety of people going from Game Developers, Artists and Streamers to Voice Actresses, Writters and Esports Players.

The podcast ran for 28 episodes before we decided to pause it indefinitely as it had become harder to mantain.

The podcast had people from both Spanish and English speaking backgrounds, so the episodes might be in either of those languages.

This was a very special project for me because it was very heartwarming to see that other creative people go through the same obstacles I go through when it comes to my mental health. No matter how long you have been doing what you are good at, people still feel insecure sometimes, and that is okay.

It started as an Inktober project in 2019, and evolved into a daily project. What I love about this project is that it let me improve my drawing skills and express my feelings with a more artistical outlet.

For this project we used the AR plugin NCam to work with TV Studio cameras and to be able to track the soccer field for the AR features we implemented.

It was a really fun project to work on because we got to travel all the way to the Univison television sets to install the software we developed.

I guess it’s all up to me to decide, but I change my mind frequently and lose interest fast, so idk.

I had heard some great things about this movie and I finally had the chance to watch it. I didn’t really connect with it until the very end in the scene where Kevin is crying with his kids, and says “I used to be a brother, but I’m not a brother anymore”.

I think the death that hit me the most was Mike’s. He just wanted to be a musician but didn’t get the chance to follow his dream because of the frustrated dreams of his family.

I hated the dad SOOO MUCH. The actor did a really good job at portraying the stereotypical macho, “boys don’t cry” kind of father.

Call of the Kraken, a Playdate game

I made my first Playdate game for the Ludum Dare Jam 55 and lived to tell about it.

The Playdate is a small fantasy console in which one can develop games using their SDK. The cool thing about the console is that it has a crank that you can use in your games. For development, you can choose to either work with Lua or the C language.

I’ve had my eyes on this device for a few months now, so when I saw them for sale at GDC, I bought one without hesitation. I also convinced a couple of Colombian game developer friends to buy one with the excuse that we would make games and at least get 1 USD in sales back.

A few weeks passed after my GDC trip, and the Ludum Dare was just around the corner. We decided it was a great opportunity for us to start developing on the platform, so we put up a team of three to make a small Playdate game.

I had heard some great things about this movie and I finally had the chance to watch it. I didn’t really connect with it until the very end in the scene where Kevin is crying with his kids, and says “I used to be a brother, but I’m not a brother anymore”.

I think the death that hit me the most was Mike’s. He just wanted to be a musician but didn’t get the chance to follow his dream because of the frustrated dreams of his family.

I hated the dad SOOO MUCH. The actor did a really good job at portraying the stereotypical macho, “boys don’t cry” kind of father.

The main character’s story continues to gets worse, yet in the end, what caused all of the issue wasn’t a conspiracy or anything of the kind, but a father not knowing how to grieve their own child. I wasn’t expecting to like the game so much. I started playing it for a couple of hours and left it without much progress, but once I really sat and played it, I was glued to the it.

Call of the Kraken, a Playdate game

I made my first Playdate game for the Ludum Dare Jam 55 and lived to tell about it.

The Playdate is a small fantasy console in which one can develop games using their SDK. The cool thing about the console is that it has a crank that you can use in your games. For development, you can choose to either work with Lua or the C language.

I’ve had my eyes on this device for a few months now, so when I saw them for sale at GDC, I bought one without hesitation. I also convinced a couple of Colombian game developer friends to buy one with the excuse that we would make games and at least get 1 USD in sales back.

A few weeks passed after my GDC trip, and the Ludum Dare was just around the corner. We decided it was a great opportunity for us to start developing on the platform, so we put up a team of three to make a small Playdate game.
